CAN-AM SPYDER INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

  INSTALLATION; Can-Am Spyder:

1.    Loosen throttle cable adjusting jam nuts and back off cable adjusters (Fig 1).

2.    Remove 2 bolts that hold the switch housing halves together and the bolt that holds cable retainer to switch housing, separate housing and remove front cable end from throttle grip (Fig 2 & 3).

a.    When removing cables from grip, be careful not to crimp cables.

3.    Remove switch from front half of housing (if applicable).

4.    Remove front half of switch housing from bike (Fig 4).

5.    Attach drill jig to front half of switch housing by inserting ¼-20 bolt into front cable hole (Fig 5)

a.    Be sure plastic spacer is between jig and housing.

6.    Install special nut on ¼-20 bolt inside the cavity of switch housing and tighten hand tight only.

7.    Insert alignment pin into bushing and into existing threaded hole in switch housing (Fig 5). This will align the jig centered over the existing threaded hole.

8.    Tighten ¼-20 bolt wrench tight.

9.    Remove alignment pin from jig.

The next two steps involve enlarging the original threaded hole in the switch housing and installing the Cruise-Mate cartridge. Use extreme caution while drilling and tapping the housing that the new threads are installed straight.

WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND USING THE DRILL JIG PROVIDED WITH YOUR CRUISE-MATE KIT AND FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY.

Drilling and tapping the new hole incorrectly is likely to cause CRUISE-MATE to operate incorrectly making proper adjustment impossible and may cause throttle to lock unexpectedly causing serious injury or death.

10. Insert drill into bushing and drill out original threaded hole to 21/64 inches .

a.    Be very careful when drilling switch housing, it is made of hard nylon (plastic) and will drill very easily.

b.    We recommend holding housing in a vice, if available, to drill hole so drill bit won’t catch when it passes through housing.

11. Remove aluminum bushing from drill jig and use the remaining hole as a guide for the 3/8-24 tap.

12. Install threads in the new hole using a 3/8-24 tap.

13. Remove drill jig from housing.

14.  Drill out middle hole in cable retainer to 3/8 so the threaded stainless steel bushing fits through the hole (Fig 6).

a.    We recommend using a step drill and holding in vice if possible.

15. At the bottom of the throttle grip there’s a small seam caused by the molding process, using a fine file or sandpaper remove this mold line.

a.    Failure to remove the mold line may prevent Cruise-Mate from working properly.

16. Reassemble control assemble and return cable adjustments to original settings.

a.    Cruise-Mate bushing will be used as the bolt to hold cable retainer in place (Fig 7).

17. Using a 7/16 wrench, tighten Cruise-Mate bushing.

a.    Again, be careful not to over tighten bushing, housing is manufactured from plastic.

18. Screw CRUISE-MATE stud and spring into bushing until you feel resistance then stop and install CRUISE-MATE handle, spring and bolt (Fig 8).

a.    Apply a drop of LocTite to threads of handle shoulder screw to ensure bolt won’t vibrate out.

b.    Be sure after assembling CRUISE-MATE, handle moves up and down freely on the stud.

You are now ready to adjust CRUISE-MATE for operation. While adjusting it’s very possible you will flood your engine (carburetor models only) so you may have to let your bike set for a few minutes before starting engine.

CAUTION; PERFORM ALL ADJUSTMENTS WITH ENGINE OFF. ADJUSTING CRUISE-MATE WITH ENGINE RUNNING COULD CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE TO ENGINE.

1.    Move CRUISE-MATE handle all the way forward (toward front of bike), turn throttle to full open and release.

a.    If throttle will not stay in full open position when you remove your hand go to step-2.

b.    If throttle stays in full open position when you remove your hand go to step 6.

2.    Move CRUISE-MATE handle all the way forward (toward front of bike).

3.    Pull down on handle portion of CRUISE-MATE

a.    Pulling down will disengage the male and female spline inside CRUISE-MATE handle.

4.    Rotate handle toward rear of bike one tooth of spline (approximately 15 °) and release handle.

a.    When turning CRUISE-MATE handle during adjustment process stud should NOT turn.

5.    Repeat steps 1 – 4 until CRUISE-MATE holds throttle at any position while on (toward front of bike) and releases throttle completely (from full open position) when CRUISE-MATE      is turned off (toward rear of bike).

6.    With throttle full open turn CRUISE-MATE handle toward rear of bike.

7.    Pull down on handle portion of CRUISE-MATE

a.    Pulling down will disengage the male and female spline inside CRUISE-MATE.

8.    Rotate handle toward front of bike one tooth of spline (approximately 15 °) and release handle.

a.    When turning CRUISE-MATE handle during adjustment process stud should NOT turn.

9.    Repeat steps 6 – 8 until CRUISE-MATE holds throttle at any position while on (handle toward front of bike) and releases throttle completely (from full open position) when CRUISE-MATE is turned off (handle toward rear of bike).
